Why Do Blow Molding Machines Need an Air-Cooled Water Chiller?

During the blow molding process, heated preforms are stretched, blown, and rapidly cooled inside the mold. If the mold temperature becomes too high or fluctuates significantly, defects such as cloudy bottle bases, uneven wall thickness, deformation, poor surface finish, and difficult demolding may occur.

An air-cooled water chiller continuously supplies temperature-controlled water to remove heat from the mold. In many PET bottle production applications, the chilled water temperature is maintained between 8°C and 15°C.

The exact water temperature should be determined according to the bottle design, resin material, production speed, mold structure, and ambient operating conditions. Stable chilled water helps maintain consistent product quality and reduces unnecessary production interruptions.

Main Cooling Points in a Blow Molding Production Line

Air-cooled chillers can be used to cool blow molds, bottle base molds, hydraulic systems, air compressors, and other auxiliary equipment. Among these applications, mold cooling usually has the greatest influence on final bottle quality.

A stable cooling water temperature helps the molded bottle solidify quickly and consistently. Under suitable operating conditions, the molding cycle of some blow molding machines may be controlled within approximately 3 to 8 seconds.

When the cooling system cannot remove heat effectively, the mold temperature may continue to rise. This can increase bottle shrinkage variation, reduce dimensional accuracy, and lead to a higher rejection rate.

How to Select an Air-Cooled Water Chiller for Blow Molding

Chiller selection should not be based only on the electrical power of the blow molding machine. The actual cooling capacity must be calculated by considering mold heat load, hourly production output, circulating water flow rate, inlet and outlet water temperature difference, and the highest expected ambient temperature.

A commonly used calculation is:

Cooling capacity = Water flow rate × Temperature difference × Conversion factor

For example, if the circulating water flow rate is 6 m³/h and the water temperature difference is 5°C, the estimated cooling load is:

6 × 5 × 1.163 = approximately 34.9 kW

This value represents the theoretical cooling requirement under the stated conditions. In actual equipment selection, a safety margin of approximately 10% to 20% is generally recommended to compensate for pipe heat gain, high summer temperatures, production changes, and long-term equipment operation.

However, selecting an oversized chiller is not always beneficial. Excessive capacity may lead to frequent compressor cycling, reduced operating efficiency, and unnecessary investment. A professional load calculation is therefore essential.

Installation and Piping Requirements

The air-cooled water chiller should be installed in a well-ventilated area. In most applications, at least 1 meter of clearance should be maintained around the condenser air inlet for ventilation, cleaning, and maintenance.

The hot-air discharge area should remain unobstructed. Installing the unit in an enclosed space or allowing hot exhaust air to return to the condenser may cause high condensing pressure, reduced cooling capacity, increased energy consumption, or high-pressure alarms.

Chilled water pipes should be properly insulated to prevent condensation and reduce heat gain. The circulating water system should normally include:

· Drainage points

· Flow protection devices

When one chiller supplies several blow molding machines, each branch pipe should have independent flow regulation. This helps prevent one machine from receiving insufficient water flow when another machine changes its operating condition.

Operators should regularly inspect the water tank level, pump pressure, circulating water quality, condenser condition, compressor operation, and alarm records.

In dusty production environments, the air-cooled condenser may need to be cleaned every one to three months. Refrigerant pressure, electrical terminals, water pumps, temperature sensors, and safety protection devices should generally be inspected every six to twelve months.

The actual maintenance interval should be adjusted according to operating hours and environmental conditions.

Routine maintenance can reduce common problems such as high-pressure alarms, insufficient water flow, unstable water temperature, and declining cooling efficiency. It can also help extend the service life of the compressor, pump, condenser, and other major components.
